Lanning caning sees of Somerset for Lancashire’s first win – Meg Lanning Powers Lancashire Thunder to First Vitality Blast Victory
Lanning Masterclass Fuels Lancashire’s Breakthrough
Lancashire Thunder finally secured their first victory of this year’s Women’s Vitality Blast, courtesy of a commanding performance from world-class Australian batter Meg Lanning. In a one-sided encounter at Emirates Old Trafford, Lanning’s unbeaten 75 off just 48 balls dismantled the Somerset attack, guiding her side to a comprehensive seven-wicket win.
Somerset Struggles Against Disciplined Bowling
Choosing to bat first, Somerset looked to establish a strong foundation through skipper Sophie Luff and Bex Odgers. The pair put together a brisk 37 in the opening 4.1 overs, but the momentum shifted dramatically once Lancashire introduced spin. Hannah Jones proved the catalyst, claiming two wickets in five balls to dismiss Odgers for 23 and Anika Learoyd for a single, effectively silencing the Somerset top order.
The pressure mounted in the eighth over when Niamh Holland fell for just 2 runs to young debutant Venus Weerappuli. At 16 years and 206 days old, Weerappuli’s debut was a historic milestone for Lancashire, celebrated with intensity by her teammates. As wickets continued to fall, including Luff who was stumped for 42 off 31 balls, Somerset found themselves struggling at 88 for 5 by the 12th over.
While Jess Hazell offered some late-innings resistance with an unbeaten 23—aided by a productive final over against Kate Cross—Somerset concluded their 20 overs on a modest 137 for 6. Hannah Jones was the standout performer for Lancashire, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 20.
Lanning Leads the Charge in Chase
Chasing 138 for the win, Lancashire Thunder approached the target with clinical precision. Lanning and Eve Jones set the tone early, combining for nine boundaries during a powerplay that yielded 62 runs. Somerset’s bowling attack, led by Luff, found no answers as Lanning cruised to her fifty in just 30 balls, featuring eight boundaries.
Though the partnership was eventually broken when Eve Jones was bowled for 43 by Erin Vukusic, and Dani Collins fell shortly after, the result was never in doubt. Lanning remained the anchor, steering the side through the middle overs with unflappable composure. Despite Vukusic claiming three wickets for 30 runs, Lanning’s partnership with Grace Johnson ensured the required run rate remained well within reach.
The match concluded in emphatic fashion as Lanning dispatched a six off Holland, followed by a final single from Ellie Threlkeld to seal the victory. Lancashire reached the target in 15.3 overs, securing both the win and a valuable bonus point.
Reflections on the Match
For Somerset, this defeat marks their first stumble in the tournament, a setback they will look to rectify in future fixtures. However, for Lancashire, this emphatic victory serves as a crucial confidence booster. The blend of experienced leadership from Lanning and the emergence of promising young talents like Weerappuli suggests a bright remainder of the season for the Thunder. The ability to chase down the target with such ease not only highlights their batting depth but also proves their intent to remain competitive throughout the Vitality Blast campaign.
