KSCA Fumes as BCCI Shifts IPL 2026 Final from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad
The IPL 2026 Playoff Venue Controversy
As the 19th edition of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches its thrilling business end, the excitement of the tournament is currently overshadowed by a significant administrative dispute. With the league stage nearing its 50th match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council have officially announced the venues for the upcoming playoffs and the grand finale. However, the decision has left the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) feeling sidelined and deeply disappointed.
The BCCI Decision: A Shift to New Frontiers
The BCCI has confirmed that the IPL 2026 playoffs will be hosted across three distinct locations: Dharamshala, New Chandigarh (Mullanpur), and Ahmedabad. Citing operational and logistical factors as a ‘special case,’ the board has opted for this distribution rather than returning to a single host city. While many expected the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), to host the final at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the board has instead opted to return to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the season’s championship clash.
KSCA Expresses Deep Disappointment
The decision to bypass Bengaluru has not gone down well with the KSCA. The association was vocal about its desire to host the marquee fixtures, with KSCA President and legendary Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad engaging in direct talks with the BCCI. Following the announcement, the KSCA issued an official statement outlining their frustration.
Key points from the KSCA statement included:
- Preparedness: The KSCA had formally conveyed their keen interest and readiness to host the playoffs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
- Proven Track Record: The association highlighted the success of the matches held in Bengaluru during the current season, noting that their crowd management, operational efficiency, and overall spectator experience were widely praised.
- Respecting Authority: Despite the disappointment, the KSCA noted that they respect the prerogative of the BCCI, even though specific reasons for the venue shift were not formally communicated to them.
Tournament Schedule and Playoff Path
The road to the trophy is now clearly mapped out. Qualifier 1 will be held at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, featuring the top two teams from the points table, with the winner securing an automatic spot in the final. The Eliminator, featuring the third and fourth-ranked sides, will take place in New Chandigarh. The loser of Qualifier 1 will then join the winner of the Eliminator in New Chandigarh for Qualifier 2, with the winner of that game progressing to face the Qualifier 1 victor in the Ahmedabad final.
As the league season winds down, all eyes remain on the final league encounter between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 24, just two days before the start of the knockout phase. With the playoff venues finalized, the focus must now return to the field, where the battle for the title remains as intense as ever. Whether the venue change will impact the morale of the fans or the players remains a point of conversation, but for now, the cricketing world waits to see who will lift the trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
What This Means for IPL Fans
The shifting of venues is a reminder of the complex logistics involved in running a tournament as large as the IPL. While regional associations like the KSCA strive to showcase their stadiums for high-stakes games, the BCCI continues to prioritize its long-term strategic vision for the tournament. As we head into the final matches of the 2026 season, the spectacle promises to be as grand as ever, regardless of the venue.
