While fans in Bengaluru were eagerly anticipating the crowning of a new champion at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the apex body has confirmed that the grand finale will instead take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31.
Why Was the Final Moved?
Traditionally, the IPL final is hosted at the home ground of the defending champions. Given that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) currently hold the title, it was widely expected that the tournament would conclude in the heart of Karnataka. However, the BCCI’s official statement clarifies that administrative disagreements led to this significant pivot. The board noted: ‘Bengaluru was originally designated to host the Final. However, owing to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted and reassigned.’
While the board did not explicitly list every grievance, industry insiders point to the recent ticketing controversy as a potential catalyst. Tensions rose when local politicians in Karnataka publicly demanded an allocation of free tickets for IPL matches, with requests for more than five tickets per MLA sparking a fierce debate. This friction between local governance and league protocols appears to have created an environment that the BCCI deemed unsuitable for hosting their flagship event.
Impact on RCB’s Home Schedule
The fallout extends beyond just the final. RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, has seen a recalibration of its home advantage. Out of their scheduled home fixtures, only five will take place in Bengaluru. The team will now play two of their crucial home games at the stadium in Raipur.
