Auqib Nabi’s absence from the Test squad left many domestic cricket observers disappointed. The BCCI Blueprint: India A Pathway to the National Side

Despite the initial disappointment of missing out on the Afghanistan series, a report from PTI journalist Kushan Sarkar indicates that the BCCI has drafted a strategic roadmap for Nabi’s international integration. Rather than throwing him directly into the deep end of senior international cricket, the selection committee wants him to gain vital experience through the India A program.

Nabi is projected to feature prominently in India A’s upcoming red-ball and white-ball fixtures against Australia A and Sri Lanka A later this year. This pathway will provide him with exposure to high-quality international opposition in controlled environments, allowing coaches to assess his readiness for the rigors of the senior national team.

India A’s home schedule against Australia A is set to take place in Puducherry, beginning with two crucial four-day matches scheduled for September 22-25 and September 29-October 2. Following the red-ball contests, the two teams will clash in three one-day matches on October 6, 9, and 11 at the same venue. Nabi is expected to play a minimum of four matches across the series against Sri Lanka A and Australia A.

Targeting the New Zealand Tour in Late 2026

The ultimate goal of this developmental phase is to prepare Nabi for India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, scheduled to begin around October 22, 2026. The grueling tour of the southern hemisphere will feature five ODIs, five T20Is, and two Test matches. The pace-friendly, swing-conducive conditions of New Zealand are widely considered to be highly suited to Nabi’s bowling style.

If Nabi can replicate his domestic dominance during the India A matches in September and October, he will present an unignorable case for selection for the New Zealand tour.
