Arshdeep Singh’s Poor Form a ‘Matter of Concern’ for PBKS, Warns Piyush Chawla

A Costly Outing for Arshdeep Singh

In the high-octane environment of the Indian Premier League, momentum is everything. For the Punjab Kings (PBKS), that momentum took a hit during their first defeat of the IPL 2026 season. Despite posting a formidable total of 222 runs, the Shreyas Iyer-led side failed to defend their target against a clinical Rajasthan Royals (RR) side led by Riyan Parag at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, April 28.

While the batting unit did its job, the spotlight shifted heavily toward the bowling attack, and specifically toward Arshdeep Singh. In a spell that left the PBKS management reeling, Singh conceded a staggering 68 runs in his four overs, managing to pick up only a single wicket. This performance has reignited a debate about the left-arm pacer’s current form and his ability to contain elite batters in the death overs.

Piyush Chawla’s Warning: The Playoff Peril

Former Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, known for his astute reading of the game, did not mince words when discussing Arshdeep’s current trajectory. Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Chawla highlighted that while occasional bad games are part of the sport, a pattern of inconsistency is a red flag.

“A game or two games here and there, you can expect [him to do badly], but it’s happening most of the time. Then it is a matter of concern, because if you look at the bigger picture – when you’re going into the playoffs – then you have to think about it,” Chawla remarked.

Chawla’s primary concern lies in the psychological and tactical pressure of the knockout stages. He warned that relying on a premium bowler who is struggling for rhythm could leave PBKS vulnerable against the league’s most aggressive batting lineups. “What if something like this happened in a playoff game? Then you’re playing a catch-up game. It’s not that you’re sitting comfortably,” he added, emphasizing that the margin for error disappears in the playoffs.

Analyzing the Numbers: A Premium Bowler in Crisis

The statistics paint a worrying picture for the Punjab Kings’ pace spearhead. In the ongoing season, Arshdeep Singh has featured in eight matches, claiming eight wickets. However, his average stands at a costly 41.12, with an economy rate of 10.96.

For a bowler of Arshdeep’s caliber, an economy rate exceeding 11 runs per over is nearly unheard of, especially considering his reputation as a death-overs specialist. Chawla noted that Arshdeep’s success is historically tied to his ability to strike early with the new ball. When he finds that early breakthrough, his entire spell tends to fall into place.

The contrast in his performances this season is stark. While he delivered a masterclass against Mumbai Indians (MI), returning figures of 3 for 22, his subsequent outings have been a struggle. Chawla acknowledged that Arshdeep bowls the most difficult phases of the game—the powerplay and the death—but maintained that as a premium bowler, he is expected to maintain a higher standard of control.

Tactical Failures and the Yorker Dilemma

Adding to the critique, former Indian opening batter Abhinav Mukund echoed Chawla’s sentiments. Mukund pointed out that Arshdeep seemed to lack a clear plan during the clash against Rajasthan Royals. This was particularly surprising given Arshdeep’s proven track record of nailing defensive yorkers under pressure.

“A concern. Because Arshdeep Singh, no matter how many runs he leaks, he comes back in the death, nails the yorkers. We’ve always known Arshdeep to be a very, very good yorker bowler,” Mukund explained. He further noted that while he doesn’t mind Arshdeep bowling wide lines—as that is often a strategic choice—the failure to execute the primary plan against RR was the real issue.

The Road Ahead for Punjab Kings

Despite the alarm bells ringing for their star bowler, Punjab Kings remain in a strong position. They currently top the IPL 2026 table with 13 points from eight matches. Their ability to post massive totals, such as the 222 they managed against RR, has kept them afloat.

However, the team knows that batting brilliance can only take them so far. To secure a trophy, they need their bowling unit, led by Arshdeep, to return to peak efficiency. Captain Shreyas Iyer will be looking for a turnaround in the bowling department as PBKS prepare to face the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 3.

  • Current Standing: 1st in IPL 2026 Table
  • Next Opponent: Gujarat Titans (GT)
  • Match Date: May 3
  • Venue: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
