Ex-BCCI Selector Srikkanth Slams Delhi Capitals Coach Hemang Badani After IPL 2026 Disaster
Crisis at the Arun Jaitley Stadium: Delhi Capitals in Turmoil
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has turned into a nightmare for the Delhi Capitals (DC). Once viewed as a team with immense potential, the franchise is currently spiraling toward a premature exit from the tournament. With the team languishing in seventh place on the points table, the atmosphere around the camp has shifted from optimism to desperation.
While losses are a part of the game, the manner in which Delhi Capitals have been crumbling has raised serious questions about the leadership and strategic direction of the team. At the center of this storm is head coach Hemang Badani, who is now facing intense scrutiny not only for the team’s on-field failures but also for his own provocative public statements.
A Humiliating Collapse Against RCB
The nadir of the season arrived this past Monday in a match that will likely haunt the Delhi Capitals management for years to come. Playing in front of their home crowd at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the side led by Axar Patel suffered a catastrophic batting collapse.
In a shocking display of fragility, the Capitals were bowled out for a meager 75 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The defeat was not just a loss but a complete demolition; RCB chased down the target in under seven overs, securing a comprehensive nine-wicket victory. This performance set the lowest total of the ongoing season, leaving fans stunned and the management exposed.
Losing so decisively on home soil has intensified the criticism directed at the team’s preparation and tactical approach, placing immense pressure on Badani to provide answers for the team’s inconsistency.
The Controversy: Badani vs. Stephen Fleming
Adding fuel to the fire are previous comments made by Hemang Badani regarding Stephen Fleming, the highly successful head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In an interview with Yo Mahesh, Badani questioned the legitimacy of Fleming’s achievements, suggesting that the success of CSK was almost entirely attributable to the legendary MS Dhoni.
Badani had pointedly asked, “If Fleming is such a big coach, why hasn’t he won anywhere else apart from the IPL?” referencing Fleming’s various stints in global leagues such as the SA20, The Hundred, and the Big Bash League. He went on to assert that Dhoni is the true “kingpin” of the CSK machinery, stating explicitly that he would not agree with anyone labeling Fleming as a great coach.
At the time, these remarks were seen as bold; however, in the wake of Delhi Capitals’ current horror show, they have returned to haunt the coach, appearing more like hubris than an objective critique.
Srikkanth Launches a Scathing Attack
The outspoken former India cricketer and ex-BCCI selector, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, has not held back in his assessment of the situation. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth slammed Badani for his lack of humility and his failure to prioritize his own professional responsibilities over criticizing others.
“On top of all this, Hemang Badani went after Stephen Fleming,” Srikkanth remarked. “Hey Hemang. First, take care of yourself before talking about others. I have always said this: ‘in life, don’t talk too much’. He spoke too much. Now, he has to shut up and watch stuff happening.”
Srikkanth further questioned Badani’s own credentials, challenging the coach to look at his own track record before dismissing the achievements of a veteran like Fleming. “Everybody is bringing this up and slamming him. Why talk about others? You should have been mindful of your job. Who are you to say Stephen Fleming won only because of MS Dhoni? What have you done? Anything special? Nothing,” Srikkanth added emphatically.
A Pattern of Inconsistency
Looking at the trajectory of Hemang Badani’s tenure, the current crisis seems to be part of a worrying trend. Appointed as head coach prior to IPL 2025, Badani’s first season ended with the team finishing fifth. While they were close to the playoffs, a sudden drop in form saw them miss out on the knockout stages.
The 2026 season is mirroring that same inconsistency. Despite having a talented roster, the team has been unable to maintain momentum, resulting in consecutive defeats and a plummet in the standings.
The Road to Recovery: Can DC Save Their Season?
The mathematical reality for Delhi Capitals is now stark. To keep their playoff dreams alive, the team needs a near-perfect run, requiring at least five wins from their remaining six matches. There is no longer any room for error or tactical experiments.
- Current Standing: 7th Place
- Immediate Goal: 5 Wins in 6 Games
- Next Critical Test: Match against Rajasthan Royals on Friday, May 1
The upcoming clash with the Rajasthan Royals will be a defining moment for the franchise. If the Capitals fail to perform, the pressure on the management—and specifically on Hemang Badani—may become unsustainable. For now, the team must silence the critics with results on the field, as the rhetoric from the sidelines has only made their situation worse.
