PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates State-of-the-Art Indoor Cricket Academy in Mizoram
A New Chapter for Cricket in Northeast India
The landscape of Indian cricket is undergoing a transformative shift. While the sport has historically thrived in major metropolitan hubs, a concerted effort is now being made to plant the seeds of excellence in India’s frontier regions. On April 28, this vision took a massive leap forward as Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a state-of-the-art indoor cricket academy in Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram.
Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs. 18.25 crores—roughly $2 million—this facility is not just a building; it is a promise of opportunity for thousands of aspiring athletes in the region. The project, brought to life through the collaborative efforts of the Cricket Association of Mizoram and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), positions Aizawl as a budding epicenter for cricketing talent.
Bridging the Infrastructure Gap
During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the government is committed to strengthening sports infrastructure far beyond the traditional reach of big cities. He noted that such initiatives are essential to identifying and nurturing raw talent, eventually providing a seamless pathway for these youngsters to enter the national cricketing ecosystem. By investing in areas like Mizoram, the BCCI is effectively democratizing the sport and ensuring that talent, not geography, dictates success.
Inside the Academy: A World-Class Facility
The new academy is designed as a holistic sports and wellness hub, ensuring that players receive professional-grade support. The construction of this facility, which began back in July 2023, reflects a sophisticated approach to athlete development. Key features of the academy include:
- Advanced Training Grounds: Multiple indoor cricket pitches that allow for year-round practice, shielding players from the volatile weather conditions often seen in the region.
- Fitness and Recovery: A dedicated ground floor featuring a fully equipped gymnasium, a swimming pool, and professional ice bath and massage facilities.
- Spectator Amenities: A viewing deck and terrace area designed for fans and coaches to monitor progress comfortably.
- Support Infrastructure: Comprehensive facilities including a cafeteria, locker rooms, and state-of-the-art IT and electrical rooms.
By providing an environment where training can continue regardless of the monsoon or harsh weather, the academy ensures that Mizoram’s cricketers remain competitive throughout the calendar year.
The Broader Vision for the Northeast
This initiative in Mizoram is part of a larger, ambitious strategy to uplift the entire Northeastern region. Similar facilities have recently been commissioned in Sikkim, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. This systematic rollout of infrastructure underscores a clear message: the Northeast is no longer an afterthought in India’s sporting roadmap.
A Watershed Moment for Mizoram Cricket
The significance of this academy cannot be overstated, especially for a state still finding its footing in the competitive domestic circuit. Mizoram made its domestic debut in 2018, and while the team has faced challenges—including a difficult finish in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy Plate Group—the hunger for success has never waned. The team has often struggled against the constraints of limited resources and infrastructure compared to more established state sides.
With this new facility, the narrative is poised to change. By offering local players access to elite training standards, the academy provides a platform for talent to blossom. It is a critical investment that could turn Mizoram into a powerhouse of cricket, helping players bridge the gap between amateur passion and professional success. As the game continues to grow, this Aizawl academy will likely be remembered as the cornerstone of the state’s future cricketing identity.
