Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up: Kapp, Wolvaardt take SA past Ireland
South Africa Defends Total in Loughborough Rain-Shortened Warm-Up
The preparation for the upcoming global tournament is officially underway, and South Africa’s women’s cricket team has laid down an impressive marker. In a highly competitive 18-over match in Loughborough, South Africa managed to successfully defend a competitive total of 136 runs against a spirited Irish side. The victory was anchored by standout individual performances from two of South Africa’s most reliable veterans: captain Laura Wolvaardt with the bat, and the ever-reliable Marizanne Kapp with the ball.
Wolvaardt Leads from the Front with Blistering Half-Century
After being asked to bat first in slightly overcast conditions, South Africa faced immediate pressure from the Irish bowling attack. However, captain Laura Wolvaardt showed exactly why she is considered one of the premier batters in the modern game. Wolvaardt played a spectacular, aggressive innings, smashing 65 runs off just 37 deliveries. Her knock was filled with elegant strokeplay and sheer power, featuring seven boundaries and three massive sixes.
While Wolvaardt dominated the Irish bowlers, the rest of the South African batting lineup struggled to find their rhythm. Ireland’s bowling attack, led by Arlene Kelly, put up a disciplined performance. Kelly was the pick of the bowlers, returning impressive figures of 3 for 29 in her allotted overs. She was ably supported by Alana Canning, who bowled a remarkably tight spell to claim 2 wickets for just 8 runs. Thanks to their efforts, Ireland managed to restrict South Africa to 136 for 8 in their 18 overs, keeping themselves well within the chase.
Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail Stifle Ireland’s Chase
Chasing 137 for victory, Ireland needed a strong start but found themselves constantly pegged back by South Africa’s elite bowling unit. The experienced Marizanne Kapp was in devastating form. Kapp dismantled the Irish batting order, picking up 4 wickets for 24 runs in a masterclass of seam bowling. Her ability to swing the ball early and execute precise cutters in the death overs left the Irish batters with very few scoring opportunities.
Adding to Ireland’s woes was the formidable presence of Shabnim Ismail. Having recently made the decision to reverse her international retirement, Ismail showed that she has lost none of her pace or competitive fire. She delivered a hostile spell, finishing with figures of 1 for 25 in her four overs. Tumi Sekhukhune also played a vital supporting role, picking up 2 for 18 to keep the pressure mounting on the opposition.
For Ireland, the chase never truly gained the momentum required to threaten the South African total. All-rounder Leah Paul was the lone bright spot in the batting department, fighting hard to score 29 runs. Unfortunately, she received very little support from the other end. Apart from Paul, only four other Irish batters managed to reach double figures, and the team was eventually bowled out for 120 in 17.4 overs, falling 16 runs short of their target.
Scotland Put On a Dominant Show Against Netherlands in Derby
In another warm-up fixture held at the county ground in Derby, Scotland registered a commanding 58-run victory over the Netherlands. Batting first, Scotland put up a formidable total of 163 for 5, thanks to a highly disciplined and collective batting effort from their top order. Opener Darcey Carter got the team off to a flyer with a solid 33, while captain Kathryn Bryce anchored the middle overs with a composed 32.
Just when the Netherlands thought they could restrict Scotland to a modest total, Priyanaz Chatterji provided the innings with a brilliant late flourish. Chatterji remained unbeaten on 32, while Gabriella Fontenla chipped in with a quickfire 20 not out to propel Scotland to an imposing 163. Iris Siegers was the standout bowler for the Netherlands, taking 2 wickets for 15 runs amidst the Scottish onslaught.
Scottish Bowlers Demolish Dutch Batting Lineup
The Dutch chase never got going as Scotland’s bowlers executed their plans to perfection. Katherine Fraser was the chief destroyer, picking up 3 wickets for 21 runs with her clever variations. She was brilliantly supported by Gabriella Fontenla, who capped off an excellent all-round day by taking 2 wickets for a mere 2 runs, and spinner Abtaha Maqsood, who also kept things incredibly tight.
The Netherlands found themselves completely outclassed and were skittled for just 105 runs. Frederique Overdijk, batting at number seven, showed some resistance with an unbeaten 28, but she ran out of partners as Scotland wrapped up a comprehensive victory. These warm-up games have set an exciting tone for the main tournament, proving that both South Africa and Scotland are finding their peak form at the perfect time.
